Homicide detectives are one of the most critical players on a police force. They investigate and oversee one of the worst crimes imaginable and also provide comfort and justice for families. They do this by tracking down the criminal responsible for the murder of their loved one.
Steps to advance to a Homicide Detective
Before choosing to pursue a career as a homicide detective, there are some basics that you need to know:
First, being a homicide detective, or any detective for that matter, is a form of law enforcement. But, it is very different then your normal police officer or sheriff. A homicide detective wears street clothes for their shift instead of a regular police uniform. In most police departments, homicide detectives must have at least a bachelor's degree. Fields of study that are the most relevant are criminal justice, administration of justice and police science. Perhaps the most important element of academy training is coursework focused on teaching the prospective detective how to subdue and question suspects. Before you are allowed to work as a homicide detective, you must complete police academy or another similar institution. You will learn such basic skills as use of firearms, first aid and emergency response, traffic control and self-defense. You will also likely be trained in such disciplines as constitutional law and civil rights.
Accept promotions to any type of detective. Since homicide is one of the top investigative departments in the police force, you may be offered other detective opportunities first. Take these as they provide excellent experience and make you more likely to get named to the homicide division later.
Information pertinent to cases can be found in a multitude of places online. Become familiar with databases that contain details about crimes and criminals. Know where to look for archived newspaper and magazine articles. Become well-versed in how to navigate social networking sites; more than one arrest has been made because a criminal posted clues online without realizing he or she was doing so.
Earn a spot on the homicide squad. After working hard and showing your commitment to the police force, hopefully you'll be offered the job you want as a homicide detective when a position opens up. Just remember to be patient and keep working hard physically, since it does take years to become a homicide detective.
In addition to physical endurance and ability, police and law enforcement candidates must also exhibit a true character and moral persona. This is important to show that you are honest, responsible and are capable of making sound judgments.
Once through all of that, you will undergo a lie detector test and an extensive drug test.
Once everything above has been successfully completed, and you are working, you will be required to go through continual training over the course of your career.
